BRIG. Harris O.D Eghagha

1978 - 1979

Brigadier General Harris Otadafevwerha Eghagha was born on 8 March 1934 in Mureje, Okpe Local Government Area in Delta State. He was appointed Military Governor of the State in July 1978 and remained in office until October 1979, during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. Prior to this appointment, he was the Commandant of the 7th Brigade of the Nigerian Army.

His achievements while as Governor of Ogun State are numerous.  In housing, the development of residences for the legislature; roads and infrastructure, the construction of an extensive road network in Abeokuta, the State Capital; in tourism and commerce, he built and commissioned the Ogun State Hotel, Abeokuta and established several industrial layouts. In education, Brig. Eghagha founded the Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic) in Abeokuta in January, 1979.

He handed over to the first democratically elected Governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, at the start of the Nigerian Second Republic.

Brigadier Harris Eghagha also served as Acting Governor of Sokoto and Kwara States, and was Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana. Brigadier Harris Eghagha died on 19 March 2009 in Lagos. He was 75 years old.
